Which One Do You Really Need?

If you’ve been building your business for a little while or even just getting started you’ve probably heard the term “brand guidelines” tossed around. You might also have come across something called “mini brand guidelines.” But what’s the difference between the two? And more importantly, how do you know which one is right for your business?

Let’s break it down.

What are brand guidelines?

Think of brand guidelines as your brand’s instruction manual. A full set of brand guidelines includes everything you (or your team) need to consistently present your brand across every platform your website, social media, client documents, packaging, and more.

These guidelines usually include:

  • Logo variations and how to use them
  • Brand color palette (with hex, RGB, CMYK codes)
  • Typography (primary, secondary, web-safe fonts)
  • Photography direction
  • Iconography and graphic style
  • Brand voice and messaging basics
  • Dos and Don’ts

They’re a go-to resource that makes sure your brand always looks and sounds like you, no matter who’s creating the content or where it’s showing up.

And what about mini brand guidelines?

Mini brand guidelines are the lighter, more condensed version. They’re perfect for business owners who are just starting out or need a clear visual direction without diving too deep (yet).

Mini guidelines usually include:

  • Primary and secondary logos
  • Color palette
  • Basic typography
  • Graphic elements if any
  • A quick overview of brand style

They offer just enough structure to get you off the ground confidently, without the overwhelm of a full, corporate-style guide.

So… which one do you need?

Here are a few things to consider:

1. How long have you been in business?
If you’re in your first 1–2 years of business, you may still be discovering your voice, refining your offers, or pivoting your direction. A mini brand guide is often the perfect fit here, it gives you room to evolve while still keeping things cohesive.

If you’ve been in business for 2+ years and have a clear sense of your audience, values, and long-term vision, a full brand guideline will support your growth and help you scale confidently, especially if you’re hiring help or collaborating with others.

2. What’s your budget?

Mini guidelines are a more accessible entry point if you’re working with a tighter budget. They still give you beautiful visuals and consistency without a big investment.

On the other hand, full brand guidelines are an investment in clarity and consistency. They save time, reduce decision fatigue, and make onboarding future team members (like social media managers, copywriters, or designers) so much easier.

3. What’s your brand’s next step?

Are you launching your first offer? → Mini.

Are you rebranding after years of growth? → Full.

Are you DIY-ing now but planning to outsource soon? → Start mini, upgrade later.

Are you ready to scale and streamline your brand experience? → Go for the full guide.

If you’re still deciding whether you’re truly ready for branding support or wondering how to prepare, this post will guide you through the key things to consider before hiring a brand designer. It’s full of questions to help you get clear on your timing, needs, and goals.

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to branding, what matters is choosing the option that supports where you are now, while setting the foundation for where you want to go.

Whether you start with a mini brand guideline or invest in the full experience, the goal is the same: to build a brand that feels aligned, looks intentional, and connects deeply with your audience.
