Let’s be honest, branding can feel a little abstract sometimes. You know your business has a vibe, a personality, a mission… but putting all of that into visuals? That’s where it can get tricky.

If you’ve ever said, “I know how I want my brand to feel, I just don’t know how to explain it,” I’ve got your back. That’s exactly why as a brand designer, I love using metaphors with my clients. They help translate big ideas into something tangible and visual.

Here are 3 of my favorite metaphors to help you see your brand more clearly and make better decisions around your visuals, messaging, and experience.

1. Your Brand is Like a Room

Imagine your brand is a beautifully styled room.
What colors are on the walls? Is the furniture modern and minimal or vintage and cozy? What kind of music is playing in the background?

This helps you think about tone, mood, and how you want people to feel when they enter your space, just like when they land on your website or scroll through your feed.

Try this:
Create a Pinterest board as if you were decorating your brand’s “living room.” Think about textures, colors, lighting, and energy. This will help guide the aesthetic direction for your visual identity.

2. Your Brand is Like a Personality

If your brand were a person, what kind of person would it be?
Are they bold and outspoken? Calm and grounded? A bit quirky and creative?

This metaphor helps define your brand voice and tone, which directly influences your copywriting, messaging, and even design elements like font choice.

Try this:
Pick 3 personality traits your ideal client would use to describe your brand. Now compare your current branding does it reflect those traits in how it looks and sounds?

3. Your Brand is Like an Outfit

Think of your brand like the outfit your business wears.
Is it polished and professional, bold and colorful, relaxed and cozy? Just like your clothes, your brand visuals tell people something before you even speak.

This is all about visual consistency and style, your logo, colors, fonts, and imagery should work together like a well-coordinated look that fits your vibe.

Try this:
Ask yourself: If my brand showed up at an event, what would it be wearing? This quick exercise helps you define your brand’s look and feel in a fun, intuitive way.

Metaphors might sound simple, but they can lead to major breakthroughs in how you understand and shape your brand. When you can see your brand more clearly, it becomes easier to design it with purpose.
