When you think of a logo, you probably picture that one design the go-to version you put on your website or your Instagram. But here’s the thing: logos aren’t one-size-fits-all. Just like your brand shows up in different places and formats, your logo needs to be flexible enough to go with it.

As a brand and website designer, I’ve seen how having a set of logo variations can seriously level up a business’s visual presence. Not only does it make your brand feel polished and professional, but it also helps you show up consistently wherever your audience finds you online or off.

Let’s dive into the key logo variations you should have (and exactly where they’ll come in handy):

Your Main Logo

This is the “full outfit” version of your logo it usually includes your business name, tagline, and maybe an icon or illustration. It’s the version that tells the whole story of your brand at a glance.

Use it on:

  • Your homepage
  • Business cards
  • Client proposals
  • Packaging and printed materials

Alternate Logo

Think of this one as the remix. It carries the same vibe as your main logo but arranged differently maybe stacked vertically or without the tagline. It’s handy for spaces where the original format feels too wide, too small, or just doesn’t fit well.

Use it on:

  • Your website footer
  • Social media headers
  • Newsletters
  • Slide decks or presentations

Submark

A submark is a tiny but mighty part of your logo system. It’s often just your initials, an icon, or a graphic element pulled from your main logo. While small, it helps keep your branding present even in tight spaces.

Use it on:

  • Instagram profile picture
  • Watermark on your photos or client work
  • Website favicon (that little symbol on your browser tab!)
  • Merch or promotional items

Do you really need all of these?

Not always. If you’re in the early stages of your business, having a solid primary logo and a submark might be enough to start strong. But if you’re more established and want to show up professionally across all touchpoints, investing in a full logo suite is 100% worth it.
